The free in-app feature allows one person to take a picture of a restaurant or bar receipt and quickly calculate each person’s total, with proportional tax and tip included. Everyone at the table can claim their individual and shared items to keep the split fair, even if they don’t have the Splitwise app installed.

The inspiration for Itemize came from a familiar problem faced by a Splitwise engineer. His run club had just finished dinner when the conversation shifted from mile splits to splitting the check. Figuring out who ordered what and who owed what was a frustrating way to end the meal, prompting Splitwise to rethink how groups divide the bill.

“Dinner should end with a great conversation, not 15 minutes of figuring out the check,” said Jon Bittner, co-founder and CEO of Splitwise. “Our ambition is to make the logistics of sharing money fade into the background, so people can focus on the experiences and relationships that matter to them.”

Itemize takes the hassle out of dividing a shared bill. Only one person needs the Splitwise app to start splitting a receipt, and others can participate without downloading the app or signing up for an account ahead of time by using a QR code. To settle the bill, friends can use Splitwise Pay, pay by cash, or add the expense to an ongoing Splitwise balance and settle up later using any supported payment method.

Starting today, the receipt-splitting feature is available for free to all Splitwise users in the United States and the United Kingdom, with plans to expand to additional markets in the coming months. The launch builds on Splitwise’s broader effort to make shared expenses easier, from dividing a single bill to managing ongoing balances between friends and family.
